Day 1

Arrival Day

Arrive at San Jose, Costa Rica, airport pick up, transfer to the hotel for overnight. 

Day 2

Irazu

In the morning, we will take the Pan-American Highway South, to start ascending the large “Iztaru”. The winding road travels through fertile lands cultivated with all kinds of vegetables as we observe a lovely panoramic view. At the top of the Irazu volcano you can observe the main craters and on a clear day both Atlantic and Pacific Oceans can be seen. As we descend to the city of Cartago we will stop at the Virgin of the Angels Basilica which according to religious custom is a peregrination site for many believers. return to San Jose midafternoon for overnight.

Day 3

San Jose to Tortuguero

We will take a city tour of San Jose, the tour immerses you in the rich Costa Rican culture and history by experiencing the beautiful museums and historical sites of San José. It begins with an orientation and drive through the beautiful Sabana Park. Next, visit the historic National Theater. Completed in 1897, the theater is a masterpiece in art and architecture. Afterwards we will visit one of the many unique museums of Costa Rica. We will continue heading to the University of Costa Rica, the Supreme Court and various sites of interest; then, we will drive to Limon to start our journey to Tortuguero, we will cruise through rivers and canals to the 47,000 acre National Park. Tortuguero is home to more than 300 species of birds. Look for toucans, parrots, kingfishers and the rare green macaw, accommodations at Tortuguero.

Day 4

Tortuguero

Cruise this morning with naturalist guides along canals lined by raffia palm, the habitat of howler and white-faced monkeys, green iguanas and tropical birds. Look for white and snowy egrets and the amazing nests of the montezuma oropendola. Then, enter the mysterious reflecting waters of Caño Palma wildlife reserve, returning to your hotel around noon, afternoon and evening free, overnight at Tortuguero.

Day 5

Tortuguero to La Fortuna

Enjoy a morning cruise on Tortuguero River, we will visit a pineapple plantation to try out Costa Rica’s famous sweet organic pineapples, next, we will drive through scenic countryside through the San Carlos Valley to reach La Fortuna mid afternoon for overnight.

Day 6

La Fortuna to Monteverde

We will take an informative, beautiful walk, you’ll learn about the behemoth Arenal Volcano, the secondary and primary tropical forest surrounding it and the interesting wildlife of the area. Once we finish the walk, we’ll head to a view point to see more of this famous volcano (note that the volcano has not been very active in the last few months but you can hear the volcano and often see flumes of gases), we will also visit La Fortuna waterfall; later, we will continue to Monteverde for overnight.

Day 7

Monteverde to Guanacaste

In Monteverde, we will take the sky tram / sky walk, spectacular combination of suspension bridges with easy and well maintained walking trails built in the Monteverde Cloud Forest and above the tropical forest canopy, enjoy the natural surroundings and relax; then we will head to the Pacific coast, driving through the only tropical dry forest in Costa Rica. Enjoy your two night leisure stay at the beach, accommodations at Guanacaste.

Day 8

Guanacaste

At leisure at Guanacaste for you to enjoy your time at the resort.

Day 9

Guanacaste to San Jose

Morning drive through the cattle ranches of Guanacaste, then, enjoy a bird and crocodile spotting cruise on the Tarcoles River, adjacent to the Carara Biological Reserve. Cruise through a mangrove reserve. This tropical bird and wildlife sanctuary is a nesting site for the scarlet macaw. Return to San Jose for ovenight.

Day 10

Departure Day

At the appropriate time, transfer to the airport.
